A radiant barrier is relatively new technology that reflects heat. When the hot summer sun heats up the roof, a radiant barrier can help prevent that heat from getting into your attic. For new construction, the most effective radiant barrier (from a performance perspective) is a shiny aluminum foil sheet on either side of a strong and durable backing material. Our technicians staple the foil sheet to the rafters leaving an air space between it and the roof so the barrier can reflect heat from the hot roof deck. During the winter, the radiant barrier can reflect heat from your home back into your attic to help keep your home warmer. To work effectively, radiant barriers need to be installed correctly and used in combination with a properly insulated and ventilated attic.
